Track and field season 109 years ago

Webb City Area Genealogical Society

The Webb City Area Genealogical Society has found an interesting photo in the archives that had been removed from a scrapbook.

The photo shows two contestants from the Southwest Missouri field meet that was held in Springfield in 1913. Presumably these were the two young men who placed first and second in the 1/2 mile race. The background shows a good view of the crowd and the stands.

The Monett Times reported that this field event surpassed records of previous years and there were more entries than there had been in the three preceding years of the event.

141 contestants, representing 16 Southwest Missouri competed in the fourth annual track meet. The event was held near the first of May and attracted an estimated crowd of 2,000 people.

The meet included entries of Class “A” and Class “B” schools. The Class “A” schools were Aurora, Joplin, Lamar, Monett, Pierce City and Springfield, with Springfield taking the trophy cup for that class.

The Class “B” schools were Ash Grove, Carterville, Drury Academy, Eldorado Springs, Everton, Golden City, Houston, Marionville, Mt. Vernon and Seymour, with Mt. Vernon taking the trophy cup for that class.

Mt. Vernon had won the cup the previous year and if they would win it in again in 1914, they would be given permanent possession of the prize.
