100 Women Who Care give big to market's WIC program

Webb City Farmers Market’s program allowing Women Infant and Children participants to receive $10 in free fresh produce weekly got a big boost Tuesday from the local chapter of 100 Women Who Care.

Representatives of the organization came to the market to deliver a $4,825 check for the market’s WIC fund.

According to market manager Roen Procter, the donation will fund $10 in weekly vouchers for 482 participants.

Although WIC is under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the market receives no government funds for its WIC program. It is funded strictly by donations from individuals and organizations.

Once a week, participants can bring their WIC card to the market’s information table, where they receive two $5 voucher tickets that they can use to purchase fresh produce and meats from farmers.

100 Women Who Care is an international organization. Valerie Doerr founded the Jasper/Newton chapter in 2018. Accompanying her at the check presentation were members Sandy Hughes and Christy Graham.

Janet Taylor, a 100 Women Who Care member and a longtime market supporter/volunteer, attended to both give and receive the donation.

The market’s WIC program was previously selected in February 2023, when it received $3,600.

Members of the 100 Women Who Care Jasper/Newton chapter meet four times a year to learn about local charities and donate $100 each to the organization they select.

Thus far, the chapter has given over $92,000 to local 501(c)3 charities.

Their next meeting will be at noon on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Joplin Public Library (in person and on Zoom). The three local charities that will present are: Aspire Scholarship, Community Clinic and Medical Loan Closet.
