Sam Adams

Aug. 19, 1936 – Feb. 7, 2022

Mr. Robert Roy “Sam” Adams, 85, of Joplin,  departed this life on Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2022, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage.

Sam entered this life on Aug. 19, 1936, in DeQueen, Ark., the only child born to the late Robert and Ora (Stubbs) Adams. He was raised in DeQueen and was a graduate of DeQueen High School. He furthered his education at Southern State College, Texarkana College, Southeast Oklahoma College and Adams State College, where he received his master’s degree. While at Adams State in Colorado, he met Rita Jean Romero and on May 28, 1966, they were married. 

Sam loved football. He signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears and was an exhibition season kicker for the Boston Patriots. After teaching and coaching for four years in LaJara, Colo., Sam and Rita moved to Joplin. Sam taught and coached football in the public schools of Joplin and Webb City for 25 years. Following his public-school career, Sam joined Pittsburgh State University as an assistant football coach for several years. He also hosted the Sam Adams Kicking and Punting Camp in Webb City and East Northport, N.Y. Many of the kickers he coached went all American or pro. Besides football, Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising bird dogs. He was also a talented artist. Sam was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City.

Sam is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rita Adams of the home; and two daughters, Julie Adams, Joplin, and Lisa Adams, New York City, N.Y.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Francisco “Paco” Gordillo officiating. Burial will follow at Carterville Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jacob Warren, Ben Warren, Christopher Windom, Kenny Steele, Shaun Steele, Ray Romero and Jeff Romero. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary, with a prayer service and Rosary at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Webb City Athletic Program in care of the mortuary.

John Beerly

April 3, 1939 – Feb. 7, 2022

John Ervin Beerly, age 82, of Joplin, passed away Monday at his home surrounded by family.

John, son of the late Fred and Vernetta (Keifer) Beerly, was born on April 3, 1939, in Lockwood. 

On Nov. 29, 1957, John was united in marriage to Sandra Greninger in Miami, Okla. 

He was employed with Elders Manufacturing for over 35 years. He was a member of the Three Points Church of Carthage. 

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved the Lord and led his family by example. John lived by his golden rule, “You can get everything out of life you want if you help enough other people get what they want out of life” in helping others and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny Beerly Jr. and his wife Brenda, Joplin, and Donny Beerly and his wife Regina, Neosho; grandchildren, Cassy Carter, Tiffany Beerly, Donny Beerly Jr. and his wife Kabo, Dustin Beerly, Scotty Beerly and his wife Shannon, Amanda Rogers and her husband Phil, Justin Smith, Whisper Turner, Tebrie Henderson, and Maeghan Cavener; great-grandchildren, Carssyn Renfro, Chloe Beerly, Jager Carter, Bradon Beerly, Trey Beerly, Noah Stills, Kelsey Beerly, Madison Crossno, Alyssa Crossno, Koen Rogers, Bonnie Smith, Tristian Smith, Khira Albious, Remy Moore and Taguin Moore; and one great-great-granddaughter, Dolly Custer. 

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one infant brother and his daughter-in-law, Tammy Beerly.

The family will hold celebration of John’s life at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Three Points Church in Carthage, with the Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Memorial contributions may be mailed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary.

Mark Cavaliere

Dec. 14, 1949 – Feb. 8, 2022

Mark Cavaliere, age 72, of Carl Junction, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Freeman West Hospital.  He was born on Dec. 14, 1949, in Denver, Colo., to Albert Mathew Cavaliere and Margaret Louise (Self) Cavaliere.

Mark liked karate, math, reading, and watching Star Trek. 

He is survived by his sister, Cathy Rommelfanger and husband Dave, Humble, Texas; a brother, Chris Cavaliere and wife Melissa, Albuquerque, N.M; a brother, Brian Cavaliere and wife Teresa, Florida; and a sister, Michelle Weber and husband Tom, California. 

Mark will be greatly missed by family and friends.  No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Carl Junction.

OBITUARY

Carol Fox

Feb. 22, 1944 – Jan. 29, 2022

Carol Jean Fox, age 77, of Joplin, passed away at her home on Saturday, Jan.  29. She was born in Kansas City, Kan. to Theodore Hemby and Vivian Maurene (Dire) Hemby on Feb. 22, 1944. 

Carol worked in finance for years, but her passion was to be a caretaker for her family and anyone else that needed help. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry Fox; and other family members. 

Carol is survived by her son, Barrie Janssen and wife Dionna; a daughter, Kristen Janssen and wife Rebecca White; granddaughters, Annie Engel, Mallory Janssen, Reese Janssen; and several nieces, nephews, siblings, and extended family members.

No services are planned at this time. Carol will be interred at a later date with her husband in Stratton, Colo. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.

Joe Patzner

April 9, 1940 – Feb. 4, 2022

Mr. Joseph William “Joe” Patzner Jr., 81, of Joplin,  formerly of Claflin, Kan., departed this life on Friday evening, Feb. 4, while at Freeman Hospital West.

Joe was born on April 9, 1940, on the family farm in Claflin, the son of the late Joseph and Georgia (Wesley) Patzner. He joined the U.S. Army in 1961, serving three years in Germany as a Spec. 4. 

He married Mary Patricia Redding on May 29, 1965, in Claflin at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He worked in construction most of his life and was a superintendent most of those years. He was a 25-year member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Georgia Patzner; a son Brent Alan Patzner; and a sister, Dorothy Carver.

Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Patzner; a son, Bradley Alan Patzner and wife, Laura; two grandsons, Matthew Patzner and wife, Amy and Jacob Patzner; one granddaughter, Shelby Yinger and husband, Brian; two great-grandchildren, Kellen and Mila Patzner; sisters, Anna Dreiling of Wichita, Kan., and Sue Von Feldt, Topeka, Kan.; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Webb City, with Father Francisco “Paco” Gordillo officiating. A second mass was held Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin, with burial following at Claflin City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus, in care of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home.

Neva Rodney

Sept. 10, 1944 – Feb. 5, 2022

Neva Rodney, age 77, of Carthage, passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022 at Carthage Health and Rehabilitation after years of declining health. She was born in Webb City, on Sept. 10, 1944, to Orville and Dorothy Cline. 

Neva worked as a waitress for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Lorie Kingry and husband Joe, Joplin; a son, Cory Rodney, Joplin; brothers, Larry Cline and wife Linda, Joplin, Garry Cline and wife Delores, Joplin; a sister, Virginia Moffett and husband Earl, Pineville, Ore.; a grandson, David Kingry and wife Chelsea, Neosho; a great-grandson, Bladen Kingry; and a great-granddaughter, Anelladee Kingry. 

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in Osborne Memorial Cemetery, Joplin. Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.

Karla Solomon

Jan. 12, 1947 – Feb. 6, 2022

Karla A. Solomon, age 75, of Webb City, passed away at 4:37 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Mercy Hospital Joplin following a short illness. Karla was born Jan. 12, 1947, and was a lifetime Webb City area resident.

Karla was a 1965 graduate of Webb City High School. She attended Missouri Southern State University, and also graduated from cosmetology school. From 1978 until 1986 she was employed with Explo-Midwest in Joplin. She later worked for Little Rascals Boutique in Joplin and currently worked for Roderique Insurance Agency in Webb City.

Karla was a member of the First Christian Church of Webb City. She volunteered many years with the Relay For Life in Webb City, and she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Social Sorority.

Karla was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Solomon, on July 22, 2018; and her parents, Speck and Helen Mahurin. She is survived by one son, Andrew Solomon, Joplin; her granddaughter, Sophia Dru Solomon, Joplin; one sister, Kathy Sandridge (Joe), Oronogo; one brother, Gale Mahurin (Terry), Oronogo; and her favorite nephew, Nathan Sandridge (Lindsay) and their twin sons, Matt and Jake.

A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carl Junction American Legion Post 781, in care of the Mortuary.
