Mrs. Karen Ruth Gibson, 79, of Joplin, departed this life on Saturday, Nov. 12, while at Mercy Hospital Joplin, after months of declining health.
Karen entered this life on April 11, 1943, on the family farm in Vermillion, S.D., one of four children born to the late Ellerd and Pearl Anderson. On Dec. 7, 1974, she was united in marriage to David “Dave” Gibson, and to this union a daughter and son were born, Kim and David. They resided in Iowa before moving to Joplin in 1978. Throughout her life she was a hardworking and devoted homemaker. She enjoyed playing the piano, was an avid reader and had a huge heart for animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Leslie Anderson.
Karen is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dave Gibson, of the home; two children, Kim Sommer and husband Joel, Melbourne, Fla., and David Gibson and wife, Lisa,, Warrenville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Ellie, Julian and Miles; two siblings, Duane Anderson, state of Arkansas, and Cheryl Peterson, state of South Dakota; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov, 21, at Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home, with Alan McCamey officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Feb. 19, 1960 – Nov. 11, 2022
James Edward Grunst Jr., age 62, of Webb City, passed away on Friday, Nov. 11, at his residence. He was born in Sherman, Texas, on Feb. 19, 1960, to James E. Grunst Sr. and Virginia (Greninger) Grunst.
James worked at Cardinal Scale in Webb City for 20 plus years, and he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He had several hobbies he loved to do in his time away from work.
James is survived by his father, James Grunst Sr., of Carthage,; a brother, Tom Grunst, Carthage; and two half-sisters, Debbie Lewton, Florida, and Pam Hartley, Joplin. He was preceded in death by his mother, in 2019, and a sister, Clara Marie Grunst.
James has been taken for cremation, and no services have been planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
Nov. 26, 1931 – Nov. 13, 2022
On Sunday, Nov. 13, Howard Lee Johnson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, relocated one last time into his heavenly home. He was 90 years and 51 weeks old. Born in Webb City on Nov. 26, 1931, to Bert and Faye Johnson. Preceded in death by his six brothers, Bert, James, Bill, Melvin, Eddie and Karl; three sisters, Jean, Imogene, and Juanita; and sons-in-law Steve Allen and Harold Phillips. He is the last surviving member among his nine siblings.
In 1952, he married his hometown sweetheart, Dorothy Irene Patterson. He then entered the Air Force and was stationed in Korea during the war. After completing his military service, Howard and Dorothy began their family of five children in Webb City. He began a career with a large wholesale company called Mama’s Cookies. That career took his family from Webb City to Tulsa, Okla., Chicago, Ill., and back to Tulsa, where he lived the last 50 plus years of his life with his enlarging family.
During all of those years, they were devoted to a local church in every location, Webb City First Christian Church, Cincinnati Avenue Christian Church, Sandusky Avenue Christian Church and Tinley Park Christian Church, often serving as elder or deacon.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy; five children, son Steve Johnson and wife Cathy, Sand Springs, Okla., daughter Connie Allen, Ankeny, lowa, daughter Cindy Phillips, Jenks, Okla., daughter Amy Underwood and husband Marshall, Sapulpa, Okla., and daughter Lori Amos and husband Al, Broken Arrow. Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He loved family, music, and humor, he enjoyed ancestry, sewing (renaissance man) and morning breakfasts with their McDonald’s gang. For the last three years, Howard and Dorothy resided at Burgundy Place Assisted Living. They were very loved there and all who knew them spoke of the love they showed for each other and the fact that Howard was hilarious.
For the last two months, they resided at Glenwood Nursing Home, where it took no time at all for staff there to share the same observation. Several staff commented that they were their favorite residents.
On June 7, 2022, Howard and Dorothy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cookson Hills Christian Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Osage Hills Christian Church, 4500 W. Edison St., Tulsa, OK 74127, with Pastor Hershel Martin officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.
Sept. 15, 1948 – Nov. 14, 2022
Kathy Elizabeth (née Furry) Perkins, aged 74, of Webb City, passed away Monday, Nov. 14.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1948, in Joplin to parents John and Cherry (née Lewellyn) Furry. She grew up in Carterville and was a proud Carterville Comet. At Carterville High School, she was a majorette, cheerleader and homecoming queen.
While working at Consumers grocery store when she was 20 years old, she fell head over heels in love with a dashing young man in plaid pants and wingtip shoes. She had found the love of her life in Dick Perkins. They were married on June 9, 1972.
She loved her dogs, Jethro and Molly, and especially her cat, Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.
Being “Memommie” and “Bubba” was her greatest joy. She loved fiercely and with her whole heart. She always wanted a “nuggle” from her grandkids and would always remind all of us to “watch your mouth.” She always said “I love you more and longer.”
She loved vacations with family, especially to Gulf Shores, and cherished the memories of the adventures that she and Dick went on.
When Dick passed away on April 20, 2018, she was devastated. The only solace we have is knowing that she is finally back with the love of her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick Perkins; her parents John and Cherry (née Lewellyn) Furry; her parents in law, Harry and Letitia (née Boyd) Perkins; her nephew, B.J. Scofield; and her brother, Michael Furry.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicki and her husband, John Jurica, Grandview, her daughter Holly and her husband, Kevin McGrath, Joplin, and her son, Michael Perkins and his wife, Jenny, Springfield; three sisters, Jonnie (née Furry) Scofield and her family, Amy (née Furry) Brown and her family, and Leslie (née Furry) Arft and her family; and finally, her favorite people, grandchildren, Cole, Peyton (Blue) and Jack Jurica, Dylan McFarland and Brian, Madison, Mason, Cali, Taylor and Morgan Perkins, and her great-grandchildren, Layla and Brooklyn Jurica.
The family will be receiving visitors at Kathy’s house from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society or to a breast cancer charity in her honor. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
Jan. 2, 1958 – Nov. 6, 2022
Saundra Kaye Witt-Welsh passed away on Sunday, Nov. 6, in her home. She was born on Jan. 2, 1958, in Carthage, to Betty Mims and Clarence Witt (Harriett).
Saundra has lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., for the past 20 years. She is survived by her husband, Mike Welsh, of Cheyenne; her niece and nephew that she called her children, Melissa James and Robert James (Anita). Nana to Justin, Amanda, Audrey, Jack, Keith, Staci, Benjamin, Jessica, Wanda, Alonzo, and Amber. Siblings Susan Thomas, Richard Witt (Patty), David Witt, Doug Witt (Debbie), Wayne Witt (Anna), Elizabeth Boswell, and Edith Stratton (Richard). Preceded in death by her parents and sister Joann.
She was the first one there before you even had to ask! She was the best wife, auntie mother, NANA, and sister you could ever ask for and she will be deeply missed!
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Simpson Funeral Home. Burial was in Webb City Cemetery.
