The annual Christmas basket program conducted by four local churches and the Elks Club got a big boost Friday when non-perishable foods collected at schools were picked up and distributed.

Emmanuel Baptist Church, First Christian Church, First Baptist Church and Central United Methodist Church will now partially fill the Christmas baskets they deliver with the donated canned goods. They will often add perishable goods, such as meats, dairy, fresh vegetables, bread… and toys.

Organizer Jerry Fisher said 55 requests for Christmas baskets were received this year, which he said is a lower number than usual. He acknowledged, though, that churches and organizations likely have their own lists. 

The Elks Club alone is planning to deliver close to 40 Christmas baskets.
