The west end of Webb City was once a small city in its own right. Residents who lived in that part of town did not need to travel far for the same services and shopping that were located downtown.
Here are a few photos from the West End.
The West End Pharmacy was located at 930 W. Daugherty St., where it curved to join Madison Street. Note the streetcar tracks.
Gus Peek’s West End Cafe was located east of the West End Pharmacy. (Frisco Church has repurposed buildings in the 900 block of West Daugherty St.)
The Ball & Gunning Mill had a large presence in the West End.
Hull’s Garage, formerly on the southwest corner of Daugherty and Madison streets, was the original home of the fire station that was located in the West End.
The West End was home to the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway’s clubhouse, powerhouse and car barn. The powerhouse building is now Skateland, which is across the street from the historic Clubhouse. The car barn was where Hot Stone Pizza is now, on the northeast corner of Madison Street and Broadway.
Looking east on Broadway, isn’t the stone retaining wall still there?
The Clubhouse, of course, is still at 115 N. Madison St. That’s the car barn behind it.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
