We have a great picture of the Atlas Mine to display this week. Note the sign on the roof line at left that says it’s the “New” Atlas Mine, which makes us wonder what happened to the original.
According to an 1899 article in The Webb City Gazette, the New Atlas Mine was located three miles south of Webb City.
The mine was operated by G. W. Ground, president; J. Frank Wilnic (sp), vice-president; S. A. Shinkle, secretary; D. S. Stevens, treasurer; R. F. Glenn, superintendent.
Mine output was 45 tons of jack and 15,000 lbs of lead per week, with 21 men on a shift.
Expenses were $500 per week.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
