Rising Sun School was located in Preston Township, northeast of Alba. The school was established before 1880 on a small plot of land adjoining Ruddick Cemetery. In the summer of 1883, the school building was moved almost a mile to the west. In 1884 the building was repaired and enlarged but was sold at auction later that same year. A new school site was purchased on Dec. 19, 1885, from Samuel and Naomi Patterson and a new building was constructed at the cost of $387.
In 1920, the Dixie school district closed and some of the Dixie students were sent to Rising Sun, then in 1951 Rising Sun and Pleasant Hill school districts were merged with students attending classes in the Rising Sun schoolhouse. The school’s final term was 1960-1961.
The public has responded to our recent request for names of the above birthday party participants.
Sue Sheckells Miller tells us it was her birthday party in 1952, hosted by her grandmother and mother, Mrs. Edna Bundy and Mrs. Betty Bundy Sheckells.
Girls on the left are (from front) Sharon Barholomew, Gretchen Told, Jackie Worthy and Dorothy ?.

The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
