Cardinals stay up late for season's first win

And then he intercepts a pitch with clear sailing for a defensive touchdown.

The Webb City Cardinals and their fans came home happy from Lebanon Friday with a season-opening win… but way past their bedtime. The game was delayed for two hours because of lightning. It started at 9 p.m. and wasn’t over until after 11:30 p.m.

Nixa, also 1-0 after defeating Republic 49-14, will be here Friday for the home season kickoff.

Webb City defeated Lebanon 35-13 even though the Yellowjackets led in rushing and first downs.

Andrew Young thwarted Lebanon’s opening drive with an interception at the 10-yard line and carried it back to the Webb City 19.

 

Joseph DeGraffenreid catches 61-yard touchdown pass.

After stopping the Yellowjackets’ second drive on downs, Webb City starting quarterback Jackson Lucas completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Joseph DeGraffenreid.

Young struck again on Lebanon’s third drive when he intercepted a pitch and ran it in 52 yards to give the Cardinals a 14-0 lead.

Webb City’s defense held on downs again, but on their fifth possession the Jackets completed a 17-play 80-yard drive to take up much of the second quarter for a halftime score of 14-7.

 

Fumble recovery.

Young returned the second-half opening kickoff for 23 yards and then caught a 73-yard Lucas pass to put the Cardinals ahead 21-7.

Garrett Powell caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Lucas later in the third quarter. 28-7

Lebanon completed a 5-play, 49-yard drive as the fourth quarter started but Mason Williams blocked the point-after. 28-13

Williams came up again with a big play as he recovered teammate Ryan Reid’s punt at the Lebanon 4-yard line.

Andrew Elwell, Webb City’s leading rusher, got a 2-yard touchdown. 35-13

Lebanon’s last threat was ended when Bryson Bard forced and recovered a fumble.
