It was announced this week that Nina Nguyen, a senior at Webb City High School, is a National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist.
Nina is the daughter of Ha Nguyen and Vuong Nguyen. She is active in theater productions, where she has performed standout roles in plays, readers theatre and musicals. She is a four-year member of show choir and an award winner in performance events at speech and debate tournaments. In fact, she has been an officer in many extracurricular clubs. She participates in many community service activities like Link Crew, PALS, and other tutoring programs and plans to major in math education.
She was one of about 1.3 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools who entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screening of program entrants.
The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, including the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
