As the 14-13 final score indicates, Webb City and Carthage were evenly matched Friday at Cardinal Stadium. There were only 2 yards of total offense separating the two teams (Carthage 274-Webb City 272).
If not for a missed extra point, the game could have gone into overtime. With their 1-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers let the clock run out and took the narrow win.
Webb City took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after the Cardinals stopped the Tigers’ first possession on downs. Tight end Gus Karnes caught a 7-yard Jackson Lucas pass in the end zone to cap the Cardinals’ 60-yard drive on their first possession.
The Tigers tied the game at 7-7 before halftime on a 27-yard pass play.
Both teams scored touchdowns in the third quarter. The Tigers struck first, followed less than a minute later by Lucas’ 73-yard run.
Webb City (3-5) will be at home again this Friday against the 5-3 Joplin Eagles to end the regular season. There will be live coverage of the game on KSN 16.

The Webb City Junior High seventh grade football team went undefeated this season, ending up at home on a closer than usual game – 26-24 over Carthage.
They had earlier shut out two teams, Republic 36-0 and Pipkin with Westport 50-0. Their other scores were 44-6 against Hickory Hills with Pershing and 37-6 against Willard.
Webb City volleyball has advanced to the semifinals of the Class 4 District 6 tournament at Springfield Catholic High School.
After a bye, the top-seed Cardinals on Wednesday defeated McDonald County 3-0. The 25-8-1 Cardinals will now play the fourth-seeded host team at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
In the other semifinal match, second-seed Carl Junction will take on Marshfield.
Winners will advance to the final at 1 p.m. Saturday. State quarterfinals will be Nov. 2.
The Cardinals wound up their regular season with a home win against Joplin, and two losses and a win at the Lafayette quad.
