Webb City paid tribute to those who sacrificed to keep us free on Veterans Day.
The events actually began Sunday when the Webb City American Legion and VFW held their annual brunch at Veterans Hall. The veterans serving veterans dished out over 150 free meals. In addition to veterans, they also served first responders, along with families.
On Monday morning, the annual Webb City High School Veterans Day Assembly was held in the Cardinal Dome. It featured an introduction of veterans and their spouses. The concert choir sang the Star Spangled Banner. And as the band played a medley of Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine and Navy anthems, veterans rose to applause as their anthem was played.
Principal Jeff Wilke read samples of the student essays about the importance of Veterans Day. He told the students it was right to honor the veterans sitting before them for their courage and willingness to make the personal sacrifices they made to protect our freedom.
A video was shown with faculty, staff and students expressing gratitude to the veterans.
Guest speaker Lt. Col. Dustin Elder urged the students to reach out to veterans, listen to their stories and learn from them.
He closed by thanking his fellow veterans and their families for the price they’ve paid for freedom.
Following the ceremony, the veterans were escorted by police cars past other schools where students were outside waving.
The end of the route was Memorial Park, where the Elks Lodge holds its annual ceremony at the band shell.
As always, veterans were invited to the Elks lodge to be served chili for lunch.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
