Voters approve Carterville's 1¢ sales tax increase



Carterville residents can look forward to street paving and other infrastructure improvements now that a majority of voters on Tuesday approved an additional 1¢ sales tax.

The vote was 142 (52.21%) in favor and 130 against.

Mayor Alan Griffin says he’s pretty happy to begin setting those improvements in motion. He says he will know more after a special meeting of the City Council on Thursday night.

The countywide question of whether property taxes should be capped was approved by a wide margin. Yes was marked by 6,193 (62.27%) voters, while No received 3,752 votes.

A lawsuit challenging the enacting law statewide is in the court system.

In Webb City, Mayor Lynn Ragsdale was reelected to another four-year term by 686 voters. He and the four council members whose terms are up were all unopposed.

Taking the oath for new two-year terms Monday will be Tyler Burgess (1st Ward), 123 votes; Alisa Barroeta (2nd Ward), 125 votes; Jerry Fisher (3rd Ward), 263 votes, and Jim Dawson (4th Ward), 176 votes.

Oronogo Mayor Charles Wilkins was also reelected, receiving 152 votes.

He and three members of the Board of Aldermen whose terms are expiring were all unopposed.

Being sworn in again Monday will be Linda Lacey (1st Ward), 33 votes; Jason Grossman (2nd Ward), 45 votes, and Kim Burnett-Francis (3rd Ward), 76 votes.
