Webb City Cafe comes to the rescue at the senior center

Meals are being served again at the Webb City Senior Citizens Center – on a reservation basis.

Maria Sanchez, owner of the Webb City Cafe, has agreed to provide the meals until further notice.

Mandy Lambeth, who works for Maria, says City Administrator Carl Francis called to ask “if my boss would be willing to help. After talking it over, she decided she could.”

Meals stopped being served at the center on April 10 after the Area Agency on Aging Region X decided, after 43 years, to discontinue its operation of a nutrition site in Webb City.

The city-owned building, at 201 N. Pennsylvania St., was closed early last week to allow the Area Agency on Aging to remove its property.

It was reopened Thursday by the Webb City Senior Citizens Center Advisory Board.

Activities, such as bingo are gradually resuming. An exercise class is being held at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. The next dance will be held in May.

You must call ahead

In order to eat lunch, you have to call ahead, by 9:30 each morning. A headcount will then be phoned-in to Webb City Cafe so Maria can determine how much to cook so there’s enough food for everyone.

The phone at the center was being hooked up again Wednesday, since Area Agency had disconnected it. The number is (417) 673-6294.

Meals are $5, and the five-day menu is the same each week. Volunteers are bringing a side dish, like they would for a covered-dish dinner.

MONDAY – one-piece breaded chicken breast and mashed potatoes with white gravy.

TUESDAY – three soft beef tacos, with sour cream and salsa.

WEDNESDAY – one-piece walleye, with coleslaw and tartar sauce.

THURSDAY – Grilled ham and cheese sandwich, with a bag of chips.

FRIDAY – Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes with white gravy and green beans.

Donations to keep the center running are being accepted by the city in a separate fund. They are tax-deductible.
