Soroptimist International of Joplin has donated $2,500 to the Webb City Farmers Market’s WIC program fund.
Each week, participants in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program attending the market can receive $10 in vouchers with which they can buy approved items from market vendors.
The market keeps a separate fund to provide the vouchers. It is funded by donations and fundraisers.
The Soroptimists’ $2,500 donation will provide vouchers for 250 WIC participants. Others interested in donating to the market’s WIC program can contact Roen Procter, market manager, at roenr.webbcityfm@gmail.com or (417) 438-5833.
Soroptimist members attended the market Tuesday to present the check to Procter and the volunteers on duty.
Karen McGlamery, a regular market volunteer not on duty Tuesday, was one of the Soroptimists.
“The WIC program aligns perfectly with our club’s goal of lifting significant obstacles and barriers away from women and children so that they can focus on achieving the education and training that they need for economic independence,” says Jennifer Reeves, a member of the organization’s programs of service committee.
