Before some of her classmates graduated and left for World War II in the early 1940s, Miss Jackie Phillips and her two attendants were still the football queen girls, and all the boys were fighting to win local games and to be football gentlemen carriers.

“Queen of Football” from King Jack ’40

Each year at the beginning of the football season a ticket sale is launched. To stimulate interest a contest is held among the senior girls for the purpose of electing a queen. The queen is chosen on the basis of sales of tickets. The three candidates chosen by the student body were: Jackie Phillips, Mabel Robinson, and Jane Hamilton.

The crowning of the queen is the climax of the football season. Jackie Phillips was crowned queen at the game at Hatten Field between Webb City and Carterville. Her attendants were the other candidates. Miss Phillips was escorted by the Student President, Elroy Thomas, Miss Hamilton by Bud Passley and Miss Robinson by Dwain McCullough. Jane Baldridge was the crown bearer and Richard Bellairs the football carrier.
