COVID stepdown wing established at Freeman Hospital
Freeman Health System has created a new transitional unit for COVID-19 patients.
The COVID-19 Stepdown (CSD) Unit will be used for patients as they transition out of the intensive care unit (ICU), also known as the C-Zone. These patients still require specialized equipment and a high level of oxygen, and they have greater care needs than those in the medical COVID unit.
The CSD Unit is located in a separate area of the hospital and rooms have been adapted for isolation.
Currently, Freeman is seeing an increase in COVID-19 patients with a higher acuity level. These patients can have significant, unpredictable needs and challenging medical conditions. The CSD Unit will ensure the ICU can be utilized for patients with the greatest need for the highest level of care.
Freeman officials say it is important to get tested if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. Self-scheduling for both COVID-19 vaccinations and testing are available at freemanhealth.com/service/covid-19.
Those without internet access can schedule vaccination or testing appointments by calling (417) 502-SHOT.
Thirty Jasper County residents (not counting Joplin) are currently hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19. Statistics for Joplin are unavailable because the city’s computer network is damaged.

The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
