Webb City Area Genealogical Society
The picture we’re displaying this week is a real photo postcard, dated Dec. 6, 1909. It was mailed at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 7, 1909, to Mrs. D. Brewer, 1812 Hickory Street, St. Louis, MO using a 1-cent stamp.
The information on the postcard reads:
Carterville, Missouri.
“Gem City of the Mines”
The central point in a district which in 1904, produced Zinc and Lead ores to the amount of $3,000,000.
(According to the inflation-rate calculator, $3,000,000 in 1909 would equal about $89,000,000 today.)
The message: Dear Mother, Sisters
Ar (sp) here today having a snow storm & turning colder, trade very good & mines busy everywhere, in Joplin tomorrow & Wed, Galena on Thursday, Yours Robt
The WCAGS has accepted ownership of the complete collection of bound volumes of the Webb City Sentinel, from 1983 (after the fire) until the final issue on Dec. 30, 2020.
Those issues can also be viewed on microfilm, along with much older issues.
WCAGS members staff the Genealogy Room on the third floor of the Webb City Public Library. Current hours are noon to 4 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Geadalogy Room.

The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
