Soccer Cardinals get eighth win
Senior night for Webb City boys soccer was held Thursday, Sept. 23, against College Heights at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals won 8-0.
The Cardinals, with a loss to Neosho and the College Heights win, are 8-2.
Team seniors are Judah Beard, Tristan Barroeta, Gabriel Gallegos, Hasten Hardy, Mareus Mask and Brady McClintock.
Webb City next plays at Ozark Tuesday before competing Oct. 1-2 in the Willard tournament.
The Webb City boys cross country team placed fifth among 30 teams Saturday at the annual Southern Stampede at Missouri Southern State University.
Dustin Brockmiller came in 15th at 16:07 to lead the Cardinals. Close behind was Roman Borboa, 18th at 16:17. The remaining top five were Evan Stevens, 55th; Mason Hedger, 93rd; and Blake Vaughn, 99th.
Abi Street led the way as the girls squad finished 14th out of 27 teams. Her time was 19:23. Riley Hawkins finished 28th at 19:56. Izzy Lopez stepped as the no. three runner this week.
Coach Dustin Miller says, “Both teams ran well for who we are. We are having some really great workouts and improving steadily each week.”
The next meet, Gans Creek Classic, is Saturday at Columbia.
Not counting potential playoff games, the Webb City softball team will get to play five games on its revamped softball field.
The first will be varsity only Monday against Wyandotte.
It will be more of a big deal when Webb City hosts Neosho at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
A ribbon-cutting will precede the game at 4 p.m.
In addition to new turf, there’s a new backstop, fencing and dugouts. The biggest improvement, though, may be from the fans’ point of view. The face of a steep incline coming down from the football field has been difficult to sit on. It’s now prime seating behind the backstop because it’s been converted to a concrete set of terraces that are suitable for lawn chairs, as well as just sitting on the concrete.
Diverting storm water away from the field is another aspect of the project. That will eliminate a lake that tended to form in the area.
The Cardinals won two and lost two last weekend at the Park Hill tournament. They initially defeated William Chrisman 10-2, then lost to Rock Bridge 6-4 and Liberty North 7-4. They finished with a 9-8 win over Warrensburg.
Still playing their home games on the baseball field, the Cardinals defeated Carl Junction Tuesday 15-3. They were defeated 9-0 Thursday at Nixa.
Webb City won a big home volleyball match Tuesday in straight sets against Joplin.
The scores were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-15. Brenda Lawrence and Kate Brownfield were the kills leaders, with eight each. Kenzie Storm and Kearston Galardo added six apiece. Kyah Sanborn logged 25 assists and seven digs. And Sophia Crane had 17 digs.
The Cardinals (9-4-1)will be home again next week against Willard on Tuesday and Branson on Thursday. In the meantime, they lost Thursday, Sept. 23, at Ozark (25-22, 25-14, 25-20), and they’re entered in the Carl Junction tournament on Saturday.
