Liberty Utilities recently released videos of the June 29 implosion of the Asbury Power Plant, which had been a landmark on the horizon in northern Jasper County for 53 years.
The utility’s former lead generator was turned off in 2020, with wind turbines more than compensating for the loss.
Though the towering buildings and 400-foot-high stacks are gone, the site is still important to the distribution of electricity.
It’s now called the Asbury Renewable Operations Center, where a substation connects the North Fork Ridge turbines to the system. And other uses are under consideration.
Liberty has published an article about the old and new eras of the Asbury site.
