Christane Mahurin and other Cardinal Pride Band members are learning this year’s new show during band camp this week. Smart phones help band members determine if they’re in the right place and double as pretend band instruments.

Band camp ends with parent preview night Friday

Assistant band director Tyler Osterman leads instruction of the new show.

The hottest days of summer and Webb City High School band camp go together it seems.

But despite the heat, the band members worked hard as they learned sections of their new show for competition season.

Field practices are held in the morning and after temperatures start to fall in the evening.

Band director Butch Owens is taking more of an administrative role this year, handing over much of the band instruction to assistant director Tyler Osterman. He was a WCHS drum major and came back last year after graduating from the University of Arkansas.

The Webb City Fire Department cooled down band members Wednesday with a fire hose. And Steve Swearengen, of Community National Bank and Trust, surprised the band by donating ice cream. His son, Bret, was a band member before graduating in May.

The highlight of band camp, though, will be when parents are invited to see how far the show has progressed at 7 p.m. Friday.
