Booklet gives glimpse of Webb City in 1911

Webb City Area Genealogical Society

October 22, 2024

We’re displaying this week a booklet of snap shots that has been discovered in our archives. It was sent to us in 2004 by Mrs. Beverly Cody.

She told us that she found the booklet in her grandmother’s things, and she remembered her mentioning that they had relatives living in Webb City and Joplin.

The photos are:

  1. The booklet cover.
  2. Webb City Central High School, between Liberty and Webb streets, just north of First Street.
  3. Eugene Field Elementary, northwest corner of Fourth and Oronogo streets.
  4. Drill rig.
  5. Unknown child, apparently laying on the sidewalk/gutter?
  6. Empire sign. In the 1911 City Directory, the Empire District Electric Company listing is: R. Niver, superintendent, 25 N. Webb St.
  7. Home of A. J. (Andy) Bisher, 829 W. Second St.

  8. Home of C. E. Matthews, 221 W. Second St.

  9. Home of Col. James O’Neil, 6 S. Pennsylvania St.
