The Webb City Cardinals’ attempt to make it back-to-back at the final four ended in the late innings of their 5-0 quarterfinal loss Saturday at Kearney.
It was the reverse of last year when Webb City hosted Kearney and went on to the semifinals and a fourth place at state.
This year’s team ended its season with a 26-8 record. Coach Andrew Doenning says goodbye to eight seniors: Christian Brock, Shaun Hunt, Brett Korth, Payton Marshall, Hunter Shull, Drew Vonder Haar, Samuel Weller and Shadrach Salazar.
Nate Miller led Webb City’s track team at state with a fourth-place finish in the Class 5 discus event.
His best throw was 176 feet 8 inches.
Fellow senior Tucker Liberatore took fifth in javelin with a throw of 169 feet 6 inches.
Evan Stevens, another senior, took seventh in the 3200 run and ninth in the 1600.
Eric Lathan took ninth in the shot.
The 4×800 relay team of Dakota Grove, Evan Stevens, Noah Lankard and Mason Hedger placed ninth.
The boys squad placed 23rd as a team, with 11 points.
Brooke Hedger placed sixth in the 1600 and eighth in the 800.
Chase Stilley placed eighth in high jump.
And the 4×800 team of Olivia Klotz, Araceli Perez, Emma McKinzie and Brooke Hedger placed 13th.
The girls scored 5 points for 34th place.
