Trailing 1-0 behind Nixa in the top of the sixth inning, Webb City’s fortunes improved with one play in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday before a large home crowd.
Chasney Brown rushed in for a fly in short left field… and made a perfect throw to pick off a Nixa runner scrambling back to tag first base. That play ended Nixa’s threat and seemed to set in motion the Cardinals’ first win of the season.
Abby Sargent started off the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth with a double. Lily Hall brought her home with a home run over the left field fence to take a 2-1 lead.
Cahoon sent the Eagles home with two strike outs in the top of the seventh.
Laney Taylor limited the Eagles to one run on four hits in five innings before being relieved by Cahoon.
The Cardinals were held to five hits by Bri Chilton. Getting hits in addition to Hall and Sargent were Cahoon, Liz Rhuems and Addy Brown.
Webb City takes its 1-0 record to Waynesville Thursday and will be in the Joplin invitational Friday and Saturday before returning for back-to-back home games: McDonald County on Monday and Lebanon on Tuesday.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
