Cardinals come back to defeat Nevada in season opener

Freshman arm and senior bats are the winning recipe

Webb City softball opened its season Monday with exciting come-from-behind win as the Cardinals defeated visiting Nevada 5-4. The game was played at the baseball field because the softball field is being upgraded with turf, dugouts and terrace seating.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first and added to it with a three-run home run in the third.

That’s when the Cardinals began their comeback, initially with a solo home run by senior short stop Peyton Hawkins.

Freshman pitcher Laney Taylor shut out the Tigers for the next four innings while the Cardinals kept on clawing back.

In the fifth, senior Morgan Brannon hit another solo home run, and Hawkins brought home senior Shelby Gardner with a triple.

Another solo home run by another senior, catcher Kaylyn Gilbert, tied the game in the sixth.

In the seventh, Gardner beat out a grounder to get on base for the third time, stole second and came home when Emma Welch hit to the gap in left field for a double.

The Cardinals are home again Thursday against Monett before playing in the Joplin tournament on Friday and Saturday. Joplin will be here Tuesday.

Peyton Hawkins is unsuccessful scoring another run for the Cardinals.
