Cardinals girls and boys teams both playing for district championships
Both Webb City girls and boys teams are in the Class 5 District 12 District tournament finals.
The boys, seeded first and seeking their third successive district championship, will play Nevada at 7 p.m. Friday, March 5, in the Cardinal Dome.
(Nevada is the official host school, but the location of games this year are being played at the higher-seed school.)
The Cardinals (19-8) and Tigers (20-5) have one win apiece in the two games they’ve played so far this year. Webb City won the first game 65-53 in Joplin’s Kaminsky Classic.

And then Nevada won with a buzzer-beater 51-50 in the Frontenac, Kan., tournament.
Webb City advanced at home Tuesday with an 89-71 win over No. 4 seed Carl Junction. Eighty-nine points is a scoring record for Webb City so far this season. In the other semifinal, Nevada got a 58-41 win over Harrisonville.
Mekhi Garrard and Cohl Vaden led Webb City in the semifinal Tuesday with 17 points apiece. Kaden Turner added 15, and Trenton Hayes and Nickhai Howard both scored 11.
Webb City ended the regular season on homecoming night Thursday with an 81-56 win over Neosho.
The third-seeded Webb City girls (9-14) upset No. 2 seed Nevada 59-48 Monday at Nevada to advance to the district final at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Carl Junction.
The Carl Junction Lady Bulldogs (16-8), at home Monday, defeated Harrisonville 66-31.
There’s a chance the district champions could host their sectional games, depending on a predetermined method of choosing the host team.
The boys sectional will be played at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.
The girls sectional will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 10.
