Cardinals make a game of it against Nixa during the first half

The Webb City Cardinals are looking to get back in the winning mode at Kickapoo Friday following their 55-21 home loss to Nixa in week 2.

Webb City (1-1) will take on the winless Chiefs, who lost their first game at home 30-7 against Joplin and then lost last week 40-27 at Neosho. It will be the second week in a row that the Class 5 Cardinals play a Class 6 school.

Prior to the game at Cardinal Stadium, Nixa was ranked sixth in Class 6, and Webb City was ranked second in Class 5.

Webb City scored first on quarterback Jackson Lucas’ 1-yard plunge that capped a 9-play 55-yard drive.

Nixa answered, but the point-after attempt was no good. 7-6

Lucas scored again on the first play of the Cardinals’ next drive with a 69-yard run. 14-6

Nixa answered again on a 7-play 59-yard drive. 14-13

As the second quarter began, Webb City gave the ball up on downs.

Nixa took the lead immediately with Maddox Gibson’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Adam McKnight. 14-20

On 3rd-and-1, Isaiah Tela had a 42-yard carry, taking the Cardinals to Nixa’s 19-yard line. Andrew Elwell ended the drive with his 1-yard rush into the end zone. 21-20

Nixa took a 27-21 lead before halftime on four plays, including a 47-yard touchdown.

Nixa used its size advantage to score four more touchdowns in the second half and keep the Cardinals from scoring again.
