It took four extra innings and a total of five Cardinal pitchers to end a 1-1 stalemate Tuesday between Webb City and John Hersey (Ill.) at Chuck Barnes Field.
It was still 1-1 in the top of the 11th inning when John Hersey scored four runs. Webb City couldn’t answer, taking the 5-1 loss.
Webb City scored first when Luke Beverlin led off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left-field line. He scored on Brody Eggleston’s grounder.
Andrew Young had three hits, including a double, to lead the Cardinals at the plate.
Cohen Epler was Webb City’s starter. Landen Piette relieved him in the fifth and finished out regulation. Landon Fletcher pitched two of the extra innings, while Chayse Denton and Braden Strickland both pitched one inning.
The 1-2 Cardinals started off their season with an 8-1 home win on Thursday over Farmington, Ark.
Beverlin, on the mound, allowed Farmington two hits and their only run as he stayed on the mound into the fourth inning. He was relieved by Denton, and Strickland closed.
The Cardinals scored a run in the first two innings, three in the fourth and three in the sixth. Designated hitter Karsen Myers and catcher Mason Williams each got three hits.
Webb City lost 5-4 at Logan-Rogersville Friday. The Cardinals took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth but gave up three runs in the bottom of that inning. Landon Fletcher pitched into the fifth inning when he was relieved by Tate Lewis.
After playing another Illinois team, Lakes Community, on Thursday at Missouri Southern, the Cardinals will be at Carl Junction (1-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The next home game will be Tuesday against Nixa (5-1).
