District track meet is Saturday at Carl Junction

Webb City boys edged Joplin by 2 points (126-124) to take first place in the Central Ozark Conference on May 6 at Branson. It was Webb City’s second COC title.

Although it was a team effort, coach Dustin Miller says Mekhi Garrard was the biggest star, winning first in triple jump, taking second in long jump and placing fifth in the 200.

The girls squad was ranked fourth but tied for third with Republic. Nixa and Ozark placed first and second, respectively. “It’s about as good as we could have done,” says Miller.

Emily Beres won the shot put and placed second in discus.

Riley Hawkins won the 1600, was second in the 3200 and fourth in the 800.

Abi Street ran with Hawkins, placing fourth in the 1600 and third in the 3200.

Haidyn Berry won javelin, and Dawson Decker placed second in the same event.

All COC meet results are here.

4-team district soccer tournament starts Monday at Neosho

Webb City is also the number-one seed in the Class 3 District 12 soccer tournament at Neosho High School. The 18-3 Cardinals will play fourth-seeded McDonald County at 4 p.m. Monday.

Second-seeded Carl Junction will play Neosho/Neosho Christian at 6 p.m. Monday. Winners will play in the final at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The Cardinals got a 1-0 overtime win at Republic Thursday, May 6. And they took second place in the conference Monday with their 1-0 win at  home over Carthage. Nixa won the conference title. Their last game of the regular season will be Thursday at Fair Grove.

Baseball Cardinals open district play Tuesday at home

As the top seed in Class 5 District 6, Webb City baseball will get to play at home as long as they win.

In the opening round, the Cardinals are set to play eighth-seeded Parkview at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18.

Second-seeded Carl Junction will also host its first-round game, which will be against seventh-seeded Neosho. That game, too, will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Barring an upset, Webb City will host McDonald County or West Plains at 5 p.m. Wednesday. And at the same time, Carl Junction will play Glendale or Branson.

The final showdown will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22.

Webb City is 23-6 going into the districts after a lopsided win Thursday at home over Kickapoo.

The Cardinals are on a 10-game winning streak. In the past week, they’ve defeated Neosho 8-1, Republic 8-0, Harrisonville 11-1 and Aurora 6-1.

Devrin Weathers set a school record at Aurora Monday by recording his 51st hit of the season. Chance Sossaman set the previous record of 50 in 2008.
