Cardinals seeded second in district tournament

Webb City, seeded second in the Class 5 District 7 baseball tournament,  will play the seventh seed, McDonald County, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Raytown South.

Top-seed Carl Junction will play eighth-seeded Ruskin at noon.

Semifinals will be the next day, Thursday, May 22, and the final will be at noon Saturday, May 24.

The rest of the teams are: Belton, third; Raytown South, fourth; Grandview, fifth, and Raytown, sixth.

Webb City, 15-13, will close its regular season at home Thursday against 5-17 Hillcrest.

In their last outing at home Tuesday, the Cardinals had scoring opportunities but couldn’t get the timely hit needed to catch up after Joplin scored two runs in the first inning. Nine Webb City runners were stranded.

Luke Beverlin kept the Eagles from scoring again through the fifth inning. Tate Lewis did the same during the sixth and seventh innings. They struck out 10 Joplin batters. Brecken Green gave up six hits as he pitched a complete-game shutout for the Eagles.

Karsen Myers went 2 for 3 at the plate and drew a walk for Webb City.

On Saturday at home, Cohen Epler threw all seven innings to shut out Seneca 5-0. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning and three in the third.

The Cardinals defeated Pleasant Hill 6-1 here Saturday. Landon Fletcher made it through six and two-thirds innings Monday before Austin Miller came in for the last out.

Andrew Young and Beverlin both had two hits. It was 0-0 before Webb City scored one run in the fourth, followed by a three-run fifth inning and two runs in the sixth.
