Webb City held off Lebanon’s attempt to take the lead in the fourth quarter and went on to win 28-20 at Cardinal Stadium Friday in the first week of the season.
The Cardinals took a 7-0 lead on Mason Williams’ 53-yard run in the first quarter, and that’s the way the scoreboard stood going into halftime.
The third quarter started badly for Webb City as the Yellowjackets forced a fumble on the kickoff return and recovered it for a touchdown.
Lebanon got the ball back and took a 14-7 lead with 8:19 left in the third quarter.
Cardinal quarterback Gabe Johnson tied the score at 14-all with a 1-yard run that capped a 67-yard drive.
Bryson Bard recovered a Yellowjacket fumble at the Webb City 24 and returned it for a touchdown to give the Cardinals a 21-14 lead.
The Yellowjackets answered with an 80-yard drive, but their attempt to go for 2 fell short, leaving Webb City with a 21-20 lead.
The Cardinals padded their lead with a 57-yard drive that ended with Johnson’s 36-yard quarterback keeper. Jared Castro kicked his fourth point-after-touchdown of the game for the 28-20 victory.
Williams was the game’s leading rusher, with 130 yards on 11 carries. He also played line backer late in the game.
River Lenker led the defense with 13 unassisted (14 total) tackles. Mason Young had 5 unassisted tackles (7 total), while Ethan Keller’s 6 tackles included a sack.
Webb City is at Nixa this week. The Eagles won 49-21 last week at Republic.
