The Webb City Cardinals are starting a two-game homestand this week against the Ozark Tigers and will entertain the Neosho Wildcats next week (Sept. 27) for homecoming.
Last week at Kickapoo, the Cardinals held a 21-19 lead at halftime but had trouble scoring in the second half. The Chiefs wound up getting their first win, 26-23, and the Cardinals dropped to 1-2.
The Ozark Tigers are also 1-2. They defeated Willard 55-13 in their season-opener but have lost to Carthage (42-6) and Republic (35-0).
Quarterback Jackson Lucas ran for 158 yards, and running back Isaiah Tela ran for 136. In fact, the Cardinals more than doubled Kickapoo’s run yardage (332-141)
Lucas completed 6 of 10 passes for 53 yards. Andrew Young caught four passes for 48 yards.
Webb City scored first on Tela’s 8-yard run that capped a 44-yard drive. After Kickapoo answered, Lucas finished a 61-yard drive with a 31-yard run. (14-7)
Kickapoo answered again in the second quarter but missed the extra point. (14-13)
Tela’s 37-yard run to the Kickapoo 7 set up the Cardinals’ third touchdown. Tela completed the 44-yard drive from 1 yard out. (21-13)
Kickapoo scored with 13 seconds left in the half but failed a 2-point attempt. (21-19)
In the third quarter, Webb City gave the ball up on downs at the Kickapoo 14 but on the Chiefs’ second play came up with a fumble. On their second play, though, Kickapoo recovered a Webb City fumble on the Kickapoo 6-yard line. From there, Kickapoo drove 94 yards to take the lead for the first time in the game. (21-26)
Webb City’s only score in the second half was a safety as the clock wound down. (23-26)
