Cards defeat Kickapoo 49‑21, look for 3rd win at Ozark

After their 49-21 home win last week over Kickapoo, the 2-1 Webb City Cardinals will be seeking their third win Friday at Ozark (1-2).

The Cardinals scored early and often to lead the Chiefs 35-7 at the half. They started the third quarter by extending their lead to 42-7. After allowing Kickapoo a touchdown, they regained their 35-point advantage, 49-14, while still in the third quarter.

Webb City’s offense had a different look, with Gabe Johnson joining Mason Williams in the backfield and Braden Strickland under center. Slade Hurd, who had shared rushing duty the first two games, was a defensive back against the Chiefs.

Johnson led all rushers with 132 yards and four touchdowns. Williams ran for 110 yards. He and Strickland both scored touchdowns. Strickland completed five of eight attempts for 82 yards passing. Holden Johnson caught two passes for 29 yards, and Williams also caught two for 22 yards. Trae Turner had the longest catch for a 31-yard gain.

Mason Young led the defense with six tackles (four unassisted). River Lenker had four, Barek Hoffman three, and Ethan Keller three.

Ozark’s Tigers have lost to Carthage (49-21) and Republic (55-33) since winning their opener against Willard (44-26).

After Ozark, the Cardinals will be on the road against Neosho (3-0) before entertaining Republic for homecoming on Oct. 3.
