Carol Butcher, age 78, of Jasper, passed away Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, at her home with family by her side.
Carol was born July 19, 1948, in Stockton to Paul and Maxine Baker.
She was a great wife and mother. She enjoyed assisting with the Boy Scouts and scrapbooking, and she loved fishing.
Carol married Bruce on Dec. 23, 1965, in Joplin, and he survives. She is also survived by one son, Tony Butcher and his wife, Amber; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Debbie Slankard, Eddy Snow and Pat Marvin; and numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Casey Butcher; three brothers, Archie, Sunny and Buddy Baker; and one sister, Mary.
Pallbearers will be David Russell, Jimmy Russell, Josh Cook, Jason Cook, Josh Craig and Johnny Johnson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, with Chaplain Bruce Salsman officiating. Burial will follow at Purcell Friends Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service.
Oct. 14, 1970 – Sept. 22, 2026
Steve Featherston, age 55, of Webb City, completed his brave journey with cancer on Sept. 22, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born Oct. 14, 1970, in Webb City to Judy C (Presley) Shaw and Stephen D Featherston.
Steve attended Webb City High School. He had a love for music of all kinds, and the louder the better, as he would say, “turn it up!!”
He had a passion for car shows, NASCAR, and cooking shows. He loved trying new recipes. He loved going shooting and talking about guns with his stepdad, Barry.
He had a great love for children, but never had any of his own. He would tell you God blessed him with many, between stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He loved them all as his own, and they loved him. He always said one of the greatest sounds in life was that full belly laugh from a child. Nothing made him happier than spending time with the kids, because he was still a big kid at heart himself.
Steve’s greatest memories with his family were on the 4th of July. He looked forward to this every year.
Steve has been a mechanic since he was 17. It was something he loved and enjoyed. He worked at B&I Tire, Goodyear, Tri State Truck Center and was employed with Republic Services. Being a Diesel Mechanic was his life. He loved teaching the trade to those who shared the same passion, and he loved his Republic Services family.
He is survived by the love of his life, Lisa Hudson; two stepsons, Daniel Hudson and wife Talisha, Joshua Hudson and fiancé Franci; eight grandchildren, John, Zeb, Savana, Gage, Braxton, Axle, Mylah and Brendon Ferguson; his mother, Christine Shaw and stepfather, Barry Shaw; his dad, Bob Gatewood; brother, Mitch Gatewood and wife, Jeannette; sister, Tetisheri Gatewood; aunt, Vickey Gomez and Husband Steve; uncle, Johnny Presley and wife Shawn; uncle Scott Presley and wife Jimi; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved pets, Peace and Lucy.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert Presley and wife, Carol Ann (Waller) Presley; and his aunt, Violet Presley.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. A celebration of Steve’s life will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ozark Memorial Park.
Nov. 20, 1929 – Sept. 19, 2026
Charmaine Joy Moss Newby, 96, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, after a long battle with dementia. She was born Nov. 20, 1929, to Charles and Frances Moss, the youngest of their 13 children.
She married Robert Eugene Newby on May 17, 1947, the same day they graduated from Webb City High School. Robert and Charmaine were blessed with five children and 58 years of marriage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 12 siblings; her husband, Robert Newby, who passed away in 2005; children, Eugenia Joy Newby, Robert Allen Newby and Joseph Gail Newby.
She is survived by her daughter, Francis McAferty; son, Roger Newby and his wife Twila Newby; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
Oct. 25, 1959 – Sept. 18, 2016
Marcia Jean Showalter, age 66, born on Oct. 25, 1959, in Mason City, Iowa, to the late Ronald and Patricia (Pals) Enabnit, passed away on Sept. 18, 2026, at her home.
Marcia attended Rockwell High School in Iowa, where she built the foundation for a life defined by kindness, perseverance, and a strong sense of responsibility. Throughout her life, Marcia found joy in the simple and meaningful things that made a house feel like home. She loved decorating and had a natural eye for creating spaces that were warm, inviting, and full of personality. She also enjoyed singing and playing guitar, and music was one of the many ways she expressed her heart.
Faith was central to Marcia’s life, and she held God close in all that she did. She was an active member of Cornerstone Revival in Carterville. Her commitment to her faith was evident in the way she lived, the way she treated others, and the steady example she set for those around her. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family.
Marcia is survived by her beloved husband, Wes Showalter, whom she married in 2002; children, Jamie Wilkins (Dave), Jennifer Martin, Jeremy Showalter (Keesha), and Mecala Showalter; grandchildren, Amanda, Josh, Moriah, Camara, Iris, Sophie, Clayton, Kai, Luna, and Lyra; and great-grandchildren, Ariel and Aurora; siblings, Melvin Enabnit (Diana), Melissa Griffith (Terry), and Melinda Stapleton; sister-in-law, Roxann Enabnit; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her infant son, Jeremy Roberts; brother, Merlin Enabnit; and brother-in-law, Bill Stapleton.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, in Carterville Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home.
Nov. 18, 1940 –Sept. 18, 2026
Phyliss Jean (Jeanie) Spencer, 85, of Joplin, passed away on Sept. 18, 2026, in Joplin.
Jeanie was born on Nov. 18, 1940, in Prosperity, to the late Ira and Edna (Roe) Byrd. Those who knew her best will remember her as a loving, kind, and generous woman whose gentle spirit touched many lives.
Jeanie shared 55 devoted years of marriage with her husband, Rupert Spencer, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Spencer; and her brother, Donald (Tip) Byrd.
She is survived by her sister, Ursalee Dowell; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Kim Spencer; daughter, Pam Spencer; nieces and nephews; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Jeanie worked as a homemaker while her children were at home, after which she worked for White Flyer in Webb City until retirement.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home.
Sept. 8, 1950 – Sept. 15, 2026
Ralph W. Waggoner, 76, of Joplin, passed away at 4:25 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2026, in St. Louis. Ralph was born on Sept. 8, 1950, in Joplin, to Eleanor (Oxford) and Wayne Waggoner.
Ralph was a lifelong Joplin resident who loved his hometown, his family, and the many people whose lives he touched. He grew up in Royal Heights and remained deeply connected to the community throughout his life.
Ralph graduated from Joplin High School in 1968 and attended Missouri Southern State University. He played baseball throughout his youth, including Ozark Little League, Babe Ruth League, Joplin High School baseball and American Legion baseball. He also loved golf and pool. He served in the National Guard and was proud to be part of the Harley-Davidson group. He also enjoyed vintage Coca-Cola signs.
On June 18, 1976, Ralph married the love of his life, Carole (Jaynes) Waggoner. Together, Ralph and Carole shared 50 wonderful years of marriage.
In their early years together, Ralph and Carole worked in Carole’s parents’ business, Gene’s Dairy Jane. They later purchased Wisor’s Chili, making wholesale chili that they sold to area restaurants. They eventually opened their own restaurant, Stogey’s Coney Island, in 1983. The name was inspired by Ralph’s nickname, “Stogey,” and the restaurant is a beloved Joplin landmark.
Ralph worked at Stogey’s alongside Carole, his sister Janet, and their daughters, Christy and Kelly. Stogey’s became a reflection of Ralph himself – welcoming, hardworking, familiar and full of character.
Above all, Ralph’s life was centered around his faith in Jesus Christ. He believed everyone deserves kindness, compassion, and love, especially those who are struggling. He would often remind others, “When you see someone down and out, think Jesus loves you and so do I. Amen.”
Ralph is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carole (Jaynes) Waggoner; his daughters, Ashleigh (Waggoner) Bauernfeind, Christy Waggoner, and Kelly (Waggoner) Weaver; his sons-in-law, Jay Bauernfeind and Jonah Weaver; his sisters, Vicki (Waggoner) Stevens and Janet DeMastors; and his six grandchildren, Kaden Bauernfeind, Conley Bauernfeind, Jace Bauernfeind, Campbell Waggoner, Owen Weaver, and Ella Weaver.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, officiated by Dr. Phillip McClendon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
