The softball Cardinals came back twice in excitiong fashion against the visiting Carthage Tigers Thursday but fell a run short, 9-8.
Webb City was trailing 5-2 in the seventh when catcher Liz Rhuems hit a 3-run homer, forcing an extra inning.
In the eighth, Carthage nearly doused the home team’s hopes by scoring 4 runs (9-5).
But the Cardinals answered with 3 runs and loaded the bases before the game ended 9-8 with a strike out.
Webb City made it to the championship game of the Friday-Saturday tournament at Warrensburg. the Cardinals defeated Harrisonville 21-6, Holden 3-2, Warrensburg 12-2 and Centralia 8-1. Belton won the final, though, 5-3.
After their 5-4 loss at Willard Monday, the 15-8 Cardinals are home again Thursday, Oct. 3, against Parkview.
The Springfield tournament is Friday and Saturday. After a road trip to Monett, the Cardinals will be home again Tuesday against Ozark.
The last home game will before districts will be Monday, Oct. 14, against Joplin.
The volleyball Cardinals at the Carl Junction tournament Saturday got six wins, including the championship game against the previously unbeaten host Bulldogs.
Webb City won the final match 25-13, 25-21. Leading up to the final, the Cardinals defeated Aurora, West Plains, Nevada and Girard, Kan. – without losing a set. Belton (20-1-1) won the first set 25-23 of the semifinal, but the Cardinals (18-3-1) came back in the next two sets 25-22 and 25-19.
Jaeli Rutledge was the kill leader in the championship match, with 8. Jaylee Van Vecelaere and Kirra Long added 5 each. Savannah Crane had 18 sets, and Avery Gardner had 16 digs.
On Tuesday night, the Cardinals defeated Carthage 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14).
After a road game Thursday at Willard, the Cardinals will host their quad Saturday in the Cardinal Dome. Webb City will play at 9 a.m. and noon. The other three teams are Grain Valley, St. Mary’s Colgan and Bentonville.
The Cardinals will return to Carl Junction Monday before entertaining Parkview Tuesday and Ozark Thursday.
