Cross country teams win first and second at Columbia meet
For the third year in a row Saturday, the Webb City cross country girls team won first place in the Gans Creek Classic gold division in Columbia. And the boys team placed second.
Arceli Perez led the girls team by finishing seventh individually with a time of 18:46.60.
She and her teammates combined for a total score of 108, which was 9 better than Owasso, Oklahoma’s 117. There were 232 runners competing for 30 schools.
Aaron Dawson’s time of 16:08.50 was the 16th best. He and his teammates scored a total of 165 points for second place to Ray-Pec’s 102 points.
There were 269 runners competing for 34 schools.
Both teams are having successful seasons. In fact, on Sept. 10, they swept the team championships at the Carthage Invitational.

The Webb City Lady Cardinals tennis team traveled to Fort Scott, Kan., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for the Tigers Invitational. In this four-team tournament, the Lady Cards went 12-0 to sweep the tournament and come home with five golds: 1 Singles, 1 Doubles, 2 Singles, 2 Doubles, and overall team.

“This was a terrific palate cleanser for us,” said coach Stephany Pace. “We will see none of these Kansas-side schools again this season. Today was the perfect opportunity for us to use what we’ve been focused on and try to make some corrections in terms of strokes and strategy.
“It’s nice to come in, play well, identify additional areas that need work – and go home with gold.
“The girls really played hard and had to battle through a couple sticky situations today,” assistant coach Reagan Morgan said.
“While most matches weren’t as close, the ones that were required the girls to figure things out, push through, try new things, and work together to get those wins. Today was a fun day.”
The 7-5 Cardinals most recently defeated Neosho 9-0 and lost to 11-1 Republic 0-9.
