Defense throttles Neosho’s offense in second half
Webb City will close out the regular football season with a home game Friday against Branson.
District playoffs start Friday, Oct. 28.
The Class 5 District 6 bracket pairings haven’t been set yet, but so far, Webb City is seeded second, and Carthage is seeded first. The other four teams listed according to points are Republic, Neosho, Willard and Parkview.
The 5-3 Cardinals are hosting the 1-7 Pirates this week, with kickoff at 7 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium. Branson’s only win was against Willard in Week 3.
Last week at Neosho, the Cardinals defense shut out the high-scoring Wildcats in the second half, while the offense extended its 28-21 halftime lead to 42-21.
Neosho scored first when Quenton Hughes connected with Isaiah Green for their first of three touchdown passes.
The Cardinals also scored their first touchdown through the air with Landon Johnson passing to William Hayes for a 49-yard completion.
Their next five touchdowns were on the ground. Breckin Galardo scored a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter and on a 33-yard carry in the second quarter. Johnson carried it in from 3 yards out in the second quarter. Omari Jackson had a 1-yard rush for the only score in the third quarter. And Johnson ended the scoring with a 1-yard carry in the fourth quarter.
Hayes caught a second pass for a total of 54 receiving yards, and Cy Darnell caught two passes for 21 yards.
Three Cardinals, Christian Brock, Kaylor Darnell and Lucas Ott, all had five unassisted tackles and three assisted tackles. Ott also had 2.5 sacks.
