District soccer champs are at home again for their quarterfinal with Glendale
Webb City soccer players are hoping for even better fan support than they received last week as they won the district championship at Cardinal Stadium.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, they will host the Glendale Falcons (23-4) in the quarterfinal.
The Cardinals don’t have the best record, 13-11, but they’ve won nine of their last 12 games. They defeated Belton 5-3 Thursday, Nov. 3, to claim the Class 3 District 6 championship trophy.
Belton took a 2-0 lead against the Cardinals before senior Alex Flores scored the first of his four goals. The game was 2-1 at the half before Belton scored early in the second half to make it 3-1.
Webb City came back with four goals for the win. After two more Flores goals tied the game, junior Josh White put Webb City ahead 4-3, and then Flores scored his final goal.
It is the first time since 1999 that Webb City has won a district championship in soccer. Getting to the final four (on Nov. 18 at Fenton) would be a first for the program.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
