Barbara Buck donated this nice view of the intersection of Central and Second Streets in Oronogo, which was taken in 1901.
The photographer was facing the south. Just past the intersection on the left is the M.S. Chadwell building. It is about all that still stands and is currently leased by the United States Postal Service from the AF & AM Lodge. This photograph was taken before the southern edition was added to the building.
A note attached to the photograph stated, “My dad, John Messick, standing on the corner of saloon, in dark suit. Was City marshal.”
The Joplin Hardware store is visible just past the saloon, there is also a small sign for the Oronogo post office.
The next street to the south is Main Street. On the northeast corner of Second and Main streets a building in the photo stood for many years and was only recently torn down.
In addition to operating a general store, M.S. Chadwell was associated with a an undertaking business in Webb City.
