Webb City Farmers Market was one of 58 nonprofit organizations receiving W.R. Corley Grants last week.
Market coordinator Roen Procter was present to receive the $4,000 check, which will help the market provide $10 in vouchers each week for Women and Infant Children participants to purchase food at the market that meets the WIC guidelines.
Although it’s a large check, market president Stefanie Thomasma says other private donations will be necessary to continue the program for the rest of the year. For more about giving, inquire at the market information desk.
The market also accepts tokens from participants in the Missouri Southern State University Lion Co-op Center for Nutrition Security. That program received a $5,000 Corley Grant.
Bob Corley, who passed away in 2019, was a lifelong area resident and entrepreneur who supported many area charities and institutions, such as MSSU, Freeman Health System, Mercy Hospital, Salvation Army and Spiva Center for the Arts. His perpetual trust continues his generosity by providing financial support to area nonprofit organizations, particularly those which assist the homeless and disadvantaged populations.
“This year we were able to assist 58 area non-profits through the distribution of $279,660,” said Chuck Brown, senior vice president and trust officer at Southwest Missouri Bank. “Over the past five years over $1 million in grants have been distributed. Mr. Corley’s legacy will continue to enhance our local communities for many years to come, and will help these organizations provide much-needed services to our residents.”

The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
