Fights cause the cancellation of future Paint the Town Red bonfires

This was the last year for the bonfire following the Paint the Town Red Parade because of nine fights that occurred at the event this year.

LeeAnn Crider, executive director of the Webb City Area Chamber of Commerce, made that announcement Monday as she delivered the chamber’s annual report.

She said the decision was reached by herself, Brenten Byrd, superintendent of the Webb City R-7 School District, and Police Chief Don Melton.

The bonfire is part of a larger festival held on the grounds between the schools on Aylor Street. It includes a pep rally, food trucks and other entertainment.

Melton said the “scuffles” occurred despite the presence of two police officers.

Crider said one of the fights involved adults.

This was the 10th year for the bonfire, beginning in 2015. It was canceled once because of a tornado warning.

Whether the rest of the activities will continue or be reimagined will be a matter to be decided by the chamber board of directors, Crider said.

The annual chamber member banquet will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Adaline Acres. Online reservations will be accepted through Friday.
