Boys track wins sectional meet, competes Friday at state

Webb City boys will be competing in 17 events at the state meet in Jefferson City Friday, after taking first place at the Class 4 Section 3 meet Saturday at Camdenton.

The team scored 120 points – 14 more points than second-place Willard.

Besides Mekhi Garrard setting a new school long-jump record, coach Dustin Miller highlights the tenacity of Grayson Smith, who broke his pole on his first pole vault attempt. “The vibration caused his hand to swell, and it was painful, but he cleared 13-foot-3, 13-6 and 13-9 on his first attempts to advance to state. This was huge, because the top five vaulters in the state and six of the top seven are in our sectional. Only 4 advance.”

Senior pole vaulter Pryce Mason placed third. He normally runs in the 4×400 relay, but his teammates had to advance without him because the vault ran more than an hour late.

“I’m very proud of this team,” says Miller

Qualifying for state are:

Mekhi Garrard, long jump (school record), first; triple jump, second; and 200, third.

Roman Borboa, 800, second; 1600, second.

Caleb Cook, 300 hurdles, third.

Luke Brumit, high jump, second; javelin, second.

Zetthew Meister, discus, fourth.

4×800 relay, fourth – Alanna Bundy, Abi Street, Lauren KJuechler, Riley Hawkins.

Emily Beres, first, shot put; second, discus.

Riley Hawkins and Abi Street missed the cut by placing fifth in the 3200 and 1600, respectively. Hawkins placed eighth in the 800.
