Girls and boys both get home wins Tuesday against Carthage

Both Webb City girls and boys varsity basketball teams had big fourth quarters Tuesday to defeat Carthage in the Cardinal Dome.

The Lady Cardinals were 10 points behind at the end of three quarters but tied the Tigers and took the lead with 3 minutes left when Brecklynn Sargent and Adalyn Maxwell made back-to-back field goals. Whitley Keith increased the lead to 52/47 with a three-pointer.

Webb City (14-7) went on to defeat the 10-11 Tigers 59-53.

Abby Sargent got into foul trouble early but was the leading scorer, with 23. Her first-quarter substitute, freshman sister Brecklynn Sargent, scored 10. Maxwell was the leading rebounder, with 8.

After their last regular-season road trip to Willard on Thursday, the Lady Cardinals will be back for four home games before districts at Willard. The remaining home schedule is: Parkview on Tuesday; Ozark on Thursday, Feb. 20; Neosho on Monday, Feb. 24; and Joplin on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The Carthage-Webb City boys game had the Cardinals trailing by 3 points in the fourth quarter when Holton Keith scored a goal, Trae Turner came up with a steal and Keith made another goal.

The Cardinals got three more steals, Turner added a goal, and Eli Pace hit a three-pointer to give Webb City a 57-50 lead. Holden Johnson scored the last points from the field, while added with free throws, gave the Cardinals a 64-58 victory.

Keith and Pace led Webb City, with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Turner added 10. Keith had 10 rebounds, along with Pace’s 7 and Mason Young’s 6.

The 12-9 Tigers had edged the Cardinals 68-65 when the teams first met on Dec. 14.

After their game Friday at Willard, the 11-10 Cardinals will play their final four games of the regular season at home against: Parkview, Tuesday; Ozark, Friday, Feb. 21; Neosho, Monday, Feb. 24, and Joplin, Friday, Feb. 28.

Webb City will host the Class 5 District 6 boys tournament, March 5 – 10.
