OBITUARY

Helen Smith

June 22, 1940 – Feb. 23, 2026

Mary “Helen” Smith, born June 22, 1940, in Webb City, entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on Feb. 23, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of Burl Clifford Hight and Ethel Pearl Hight.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; the love of her life and devoted husband of 39 years, Robert “Bob” Smith; her brothers, Donnie Hight and Robert Hight; her brother-in-law, Gary McVay Sr.; one niece, Christie Peavler; two nephews, Robert Hight Jr. and Donald Hight Jr.; and one great niece Hope McVay.

Although Helen never had children of her own, she became a second mother and grandmother to countless people throughout her life. Her spunky personality, quick wit, and warm heart lit up every room she entered. She loved deeply, laughed often, and gave freely leaving an unforgettable impact on everyone lucky enough to know her.

She is survived by her sisters, Bonnie Bishop and Julie McVay; her brother, Mokie Hight (Charlie); her sisters-in-law, Millie Hight and Dodie Hight; cherished nieces, Ronnie Lee James (Eric), Dina Winningham (Anthony), Jennie Tournear (Shawn), Traci Borders (John), Sherri Lynn Crismon, Peggy Johnson (Mike), Theresa Hight, and Keri Dunlap; nephews Darren Bishop, Marty McVay (Jennifer), Gary McVay Jr. Christina), Rusty Hight, Mark Hight(Shelly), and Richard Hight(Sarah); as well as many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. who adored her.

Helen’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. She will be forever missed and forever remembered by all who had the joy of sharing in her life.

The family held a memorial service, Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Joplin, with Pastor Robert Nutting officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
