Library director Jake Johnson is thanked by the Webb City Area Genealogical Society for finding, applying for and receiving a grant to replace old computers on The Third Floor – and spending days installing them.
Society member Marti Pittman laughs as she describes the old computers that have been replaced. They were outdated and s-l-o-w. The new ones are fast.
One of the new computer stations includes a wide monitor that can be rotated to a vertical position, which is perfect for reading newspapers on the internet or on microfilm. The hulking old microfilm readers with built-in screens were previously replaced with a reader that displays on a computer monitor.
Society members and visitors to The Third Floor of the Webb City Public Library are free to use the society’s memberships to work on genealogy with apps such as ancestry.com and to view newspapers with newspapers.com.
Johnson received a $3,807 grant from the Missouri State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
