Did you ever pump gas at the small gas station on the triangle-shape property on the east edge of Webb City? Or do you just remember it in a rundown condition?
The Route 66 medallion and park are now where it stood.
Other buildings in this collection of David Cash photos that are no longer standing are the First Baptist Church, Spracklen’s Studio, Hull’s Garage and the gas station at Webb Street and Broadway.
While researching these buildings, we found an interesting newspaper story about a potentially explosive fire at the salvage yard near the “Y” gas station.
What possibly could have been a serious explosion failed to materialize here last night when a storage building which contained, among other things, four cases of dynamite, burned to the ground in a spectacular blaze at 517 East Broadway.
With care not to spray the burning building as water sets off burning explosives, Webb City and Carterville firemen stayed on the scene from 11:15 o’clock until 1:30 this morning wetting down buildings in the danger area. Two adjoining buildings, also in the salvage yard were the most dangered by distance; however a Phillips 66 station across the street was threatened as high wind and subdued explosions carried the flames and sparks high into the air.
The flames could be seen for miles, causing a large crowd to assemble to witness the fire.
According to Bud Sheuy, Webb City fire chief, the origin of the fire is unknown. The salvage yard closed at 5 o’clock.
No insurance damage report on the building, which is owned by S.W. Firth, has been released, although the building was a total loss in addition to much damage to other buildings in the yard.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
