Webb City Parks and Recreation announces the upcoming start of a new program, youth basketball.
There will be boys and girls division by age (as of Dec. 1, 2026): U6, U8, U10 and U13.
Registration is open now through the Nov. 16 deadline. The cost is $45. All games will be played at The W Club, from Jan. 16 to Feb. 20. Practices can begin as soon as Dec. 15.
Representatives of the Missouri Humanities Council on Thursday morning are scheduled to visit the Webb City Public Library, which has requested to be one of the Missouri hosts for the 2027 Smithsonian traveling exhibition.
The exhibit, Spark! Places of Innovation, will highlight innovation that has happened or is occurring in small towns.
Presenters representing the library, Friends of the Library, Webb City Historical Society and Webb City Area Genealogical Society will encourage the Humanities Council representatives to chose the library as one of the six-week hosts during the exhibit’s tour of the state from June 2027 to March 2028.
Cardinal Scale, founded by William H. Perry in his garage in 1950, could be used as one local example of small-town inventiveness to go along with the exhibit.
Tentative plans for activities beyond the exhibit, including tours and presentations with a local perspective, will be pitched as further reason for the library to be selected.
Also at the library tomorrow afternoon, the Webb City Historical Society will meet virtually with designers who will come up with a new website for the organization. A grant has been awarded to fund creation of the website.
The State Historical Society of Missouri announces it will prepare a new documentary, “The Trail State,” in conjunction with Conservation Expo 2026.
The film examines how Missouri has taken a leadership role of bringing communities together in the process of making trails. The 237-mile Katy Trail, once an abandoned rail line, has become a major tourist draw for the communities is passes by. And it has inspired more trails.
The film’s premiere, at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the State Historical Society of Missouri Center for Missouri Studies, 605 Elm St., Columbia, will kick off the Conservation Expo weekend, Sept. 11-13, with the remainder of the events at Cooper’s Landing on the Katy Trail in Columbia.

Although a new law allowing the Missouri Department of Transportation to increase the speed limit in rural areas to 75 mph takes effect Friday, Aug. 28, a review will be conducted first.
In an update released this week, MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger said, We’re hoping to complete this review of the eligible locations by the end of the year and provide an update on the path forward.
“For now, we implore drivers to obey the posted speed limits, especially in our hundreds of work zones across the state.”
It’s expected the speed may be raised along rural stretches of I-44 – but not in or near Joplin and Springfield.
