From the 3rd floor of the Webb City Public Library

The Boyers and other 1940s Alba Aces

Webb City Area Genealogical Society

We’re recalling the heyday of baseball in Alba because the field was dedicated on Memorial Day weekend as Boyer Field in recognition of the famous Boyer brothers.

A sign has been installed with the names of the seven Boyer brothers, who all played professional baseball.

Ken, Cloyd and Clete Boyer are in the Webb City R-7 Hall of Fame. Ken is in the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. Cloyd and Clete also had major-league careers. The other four are Wayne, Lynn, Ron and Len.

In our archives we’ve found a newspaper clipping featuring 1940s photos of the Alba Aces, submitted by their coach, Buford Cooper. (We’re not sure about the date of publication or which newspaper the clipping is from.)

As always, please provide more information by sending a message to news@webbcity.net.

Sentinel bound volumes are now in the Genealogy Room

The WCAGS has accepted ownership of the complete collection of bound volumes of the Webb City Sentinel, from 1983 (after the fire) until the final issue on Dec. 30, 2020.

Those issues can also be viewed on microfilm, along with much older issues.
