Webb City schools got off to a smooth, uneventful start this week – even though there was a thunderstorm as students were arriving on the first day, which was Monday.
Superintendent Brenten Byrd wants to give special credit to the transportation department for the improvements it has made.
“We were done at 4:30 and 4:24” the first two days, he said. That meant all the buses had finished their runs and were back in the barn by those times.
It’s a “much upgraded system,” Byrd says. “It lets us (and parents) know where the kids are at – when they get to school and when they get home.”
Transportation director Tony Philpot says he has enough bus drivers but could use a couple more. Here’s where to apply for any of the open positions in the district.
One particularly noticeable change is a flashing sign that’s been installed at the intersection in front of the Central Office, where traffic especially gets crazy when school lets out.
Over the summer, there were new security entrances installed at the middle school and Harry S Truman Elementary.
The track was resurfaced, and a new javelin-throw area was established. Byrd says the new track “almost refreshes the whole stadium.”
Madge T. James Kindergarten got a new roof, and some drainage issues are being addressed there.
New asphalt was laid in several locations.
And the Ronald R. Barton Performing Arts Center was updated with new house lighting and carpet.
