Trick or treaters welcome downtown when they get out of school early for Halloween

Bob Foos

Youngsters get more daylight hours for trick or treating again this year because the Webb City School District has scheduled an in-service professional day for the afternoon of Oct. 31.

Welcoming the trick or treaters as they get out early will be downtown Webb City merchants and offices, including City Hall.

Students will be let out in phases from 12:25 to 12:45 p.m.

Trunk or treat events we’ve been made aware of will be at Central United Methodist Church, 5 S. Pennsylvania St., and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 909 N. Madison St.

Saturday night at the library

Sean Fitzgibbon discusses his graphic novel about dark days at the Crescent Hotel

Haunted history and paranormal investigation

Sean Fitzgibbon will discuss what he found out through extensive research for his graphic nonfiction book, “What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel.”

Fitzgibbon, who grew up in Webb City, became interested in the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Ark., when going on a tour with his parents.

His book explores the stories surrounding the Crescent Hotel’s strange and tragic two years as The Baker Hospital, a Depression Era cancer hospital. The 240-page fully-painted book blends oral histories, newspaper articles and Norman Baker’s own vanity biography to examine this historical happening and the complicated determinations of yesteryear’s monsters.

Fitzgibbon’s presentation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the library.

Following it, from 8 to 11 p.m., will be a haunted history tour of the library conducted by the Paranormal Science Lab.

According to PSL, the library has been the site of paranormal activity for many years and is one of the most active locations in Missouri.

A paranormal investigation will follow the tour.

Walking and stairs involved. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Tickets are $40 and may be purchased from the Paranormal Science Lab. Proceeds will benefit the library.
